Sonneveld Hydrangea
Experts in growing hydrangea
Piet, Henk and Steve Sonneveld; three brothers from a family of growers. They have been growing cut hydrangeas since 1999. In 2007, they said goodbye to peppers and continued to specialise in growing hydrangeas. Today, the brothers grow a wide range of Hydrangeas on 6.5 hectares, from March to January. Five years ago, the cultivation of Helleborus was added, which fits in very nicely with the Hortensia's dormant period.
More about Sonneveld Hydrangea
Securing sustainable hydrangea cultivation for the futur
Nowadays, growers can control the greenhouse climate very precisely. Still, the Hydrangea is a tad stubborn, so it is not possible to deliver year-round production. Pete, Henk and Steve consider it important to be able to provide the market with a wide range over a wide period of time. Of the early varieties, which are cut from March to July, the brothers have grown many different colours.
Sonneveld considers sustainability very important. Heat in the greenhouse is taken from the ground from a depth of 2.000 metres (Geothermal). The electricity they need is generated as much as possible with solar panels. All their waste is recycled on site. Increasingly, they are making use of all that nature offers us. Unwanted insects and fungi are controlled as much as possible with natural enemies. These are so small that they are almost invisible to the eye. Since this year, Sonneveld is also FSI certified (MPS GAP and MPS A).
